Accessibility

If you have psoriatic arthritis, making your home more comfortable and accommodating does not have to be a major remodeling project. A few simple alterations can keep your daily routine from becoming a strain on your joints and bones.

  • To alleviate stress on finger joints, use enlarged key holders to help make turning keys easier. Special devices designed to make keys easier to use are available.
  • To make watering houseplants simpler, consider purchasing an indoor plant hose that you can attach to your kitchen sink. The hose is lightweight and easy to manage.
  • You might think about replacing traditional light switches with rocker panel light switches that can be turned on by pressing it with your arm or elbow or the palm of your hand. Make sure light switches are in a place you can reach to illuminate a room before entering.
  • Make doors easier to open and close by installing lever handles, or by tying a string or cord from the doorknob and using it to pull the door shut as you walk through. Cover knobs with padded doorknob covers, which are available at most hardware stores. This makes it easier to grab the doorknob because it requires less muscle tensing in the fingers.
  • Try using a single-lever faucet with a long handle, like one found in many kitchens. If you have separate controls for hot and cold water, visit a plumbing supply shop and buy a set of wrist blades. Wrist blades are wide wing-type handles that you can push with your forearm, wrist, or heel of your hand.
